Securing the Internet of Things (IoT)

10 September 2018
With the technological advancements emerging in recent years, it seems like everything is interconnected. Individuals can change the temperature in their house, open curtains, turn on a light, unlock a door or even track the contents of their refrigerator. All of these items are collectively referred to as the Internet of Things. According to Dictionary.com, the Internet of Things (often noted as IoT) is “a network of everyday devices, appliances and other objects equipped with computer chips and sensors that can collect and transmit data through the Internet” (Random House, 2017).

Business Continuity Plans: Enhance Cybersecurity in the Hospitality Industry

13 August 2018
With countless cyberattacks occurring in recent years, cybersecurity has become an unseparated concern during daily operation. To protect the business from incident influence, a continuity plan that integrates cybersecurity must be designed and well-implemented for hotels, restaurants and clubs.

A Few of My Favorite (HITEC) Things

29 June 2018
It is hard to believe that HITEC is over. If you had the chance to read my pre-HITEC blog, you might recall that I was fretting about being ready for HITEC. Now that it is over, I cannot believe how fast it went by. HITEC this year was a great show for me — and I am going to imagine for a lot of others as well.

Insight on HFTP's Largest HITEC in History - Content and Reporting from HITEC Houston

29 June 2018
Last week HFTP hosted the largest HITEC in the event’s 46-year history. Taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas USA, the over 6,650 attendees had access to four days of industry-specific education in a variety of formats, an exhibit hall featuring over 380 companies, and numerous social events and parties, beginning with the Opening Party presented by Samsung and HFTP at the House of Blues. Just that sentence alone presents an overwhelming summary of activity crammed into four days. Imagine being there and maximizing what you could take-away from such a wide-ranging program. It is difficult to do.

Remember HITEC Houston?

27 June 2018
Written By Kara Heermans, HITEC Guest Blogger - I hope you have not forgotten the excitement of HITEC® Houston already — but I know how quickly returning to a large inbox and a pile of to-do items can cast aside your intentions for all those good ideas garnered from the conference. While it is tempting to throw a couple new pens in your desk drawer, entertain your kids with the blinking fidget spinners, and let the stack of business cards start to gather dust until HITEC next year… DON’T!

Outsourcing Cybersecurity and Contracts

4 September 2018
For many companies in the hospitality space running smaller operations, having a full-time IT person on staff may not be an option. Other companies may have an IT manager on staff, but outsource the cybersecurity responsibilities to a company that specifically focuses on the increasing dangers pertaining to cyber threats. There can be multiple reasons why a company would decide to outsource cybersecurity; therefore, companies must know how to traverse finding the company that is the right fit for their organization.

HITEC: Where You Can Learn, Network and Have Fun

26 June 2018
It was my first HITEC. I ensure it will not be the ONLY one. I am surprised by how much I learned and gained from attending this event. I am also impressed by how organized this event was, especially considering the size of the conference.

The Realities of a Memorable Guest Experience

20 June 2018
HITEC always kicks things off with a lot of energy and this year was no exception! It was lovely to see Samsung coordinate with HFTP this year on the opening event. The shared experience of everyone enjoying themselves at the House of Blues and puttin’ the hands up to Flo Rida fostered a fun moment of togetherness in the industry.

The Challenge for Hotels When It Comes to Securing Their Systems

20 August 2018
In hotels, guests are a unique challenge to securing hotel systems. One of the first things a hotel guest does once they reach their hotel room is to check their Internet connection. According to studies conducted by Dr. Agnes DeFranco, CHE, CHAE, CHIA and Dr. Cristian Morosan, CHTP, CHE who are both researchers at the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, over 80 percent of travelers from the United States travel with at least one mobile device — whether it be a laptop, tablet, smartphone or a combination of the three.

Technology as a Cultural Challenge in the Hospitality Industry

20 June 2018
There is one idea that permeates the sessions at the 2018 Club and Hotel Controllers Conference, and it is that technology is ingrained in people’s lives. Be it the tech-savvy millennials or the digital native Gen Z, the way in which individuals interact with each other and their environment is being continuously transformed by the evolution of AI.

HITEC 2018 Hidden Treasures

20 June 2018
By Jennifer Jones, Guest Blogger - In the sea of exhibitors, it’s tough to get through the entire exhibit hall every year. In addition, there are general sessions to attend, Tech Talks to listen to and educational forums to sit in. How can one possibly get through it all? Allow me to be your personal concierge to point out a few hidden treasures I found on the showroom floor. These are a fraction of what you can find along those aisles, so take my suggestions and continue to do your own explorations. There is one last day left to find those hidden gems.

For Everything, There is a Season

20 June 2018
By James Lingle, Guest Blogger - I had to make a choice this morning. I had to choose between two sessions that I wanted to attend that were happening at the same time. Both were interesting, but until I can clone myself, I had to pick one. I decided on Blockchain – primarily because I know the least about it (after all, they are educational sessions!).

A European Vacation of 'Pay at the Table'

14 June 2018
By Jennifer Jones, official guest blogger for HITEC Houston 2018 - I recently took an 11-day vacation to Europe and spent some time in Paris and various cities around Portugal. It was lovely! I toured the vineyards in the Douro Valley outside Porto, hiked the elusive Green Cauldon on Madeira Island, paddled around the grottos in Lagos and sipped a lot of rosé at Parisian brasseries while it poured rain. While my adventures were varied, and most made me feel better about the pounds of pastries I devoured, I noticed a similar pattern every time I went to settle a check. Not one person ever touched my credit card at a bar or restaurant!

My HITEC To-Do List (and Maybe Something for You, Too!)

12 June 2018
I cannot count the number of times I have come to the realization that it is now time for something that I am not completely sure I am ready for. I feel that way about HITEC this year. Not that I’m not ready for HITEC – I’m just not ready for HITEC! Every year, as part of my plan to make the most of HITEC, I take the time to look through the educational programs and the show floor listing to find things that are on my “must” list.

HITEC Houston 2018: An Open Call for Partnership and Collaboration

12 June 2018
Getting ready to exhibit at HITEC® is one of our busiest times as a solution provider. We are configuring servers, packing miles of cable and transporting very large flat screen TVs, in addition to preparing talking points and scheduling meetings. From marketing to engineering to the logistics department, most everyone in the company has a role in producing a successful show. It would be impossible for one person or a single department to do alone.

24 May 2018
Is it good to hug a tree? Yes! It has been proven that hugging a tree can benefit our mental and physical well-being. Since everything is about energy, can financial controllers positively influence their customers’ and stakeholders’ well-being in a similar way? Yes, they can — through their level of consciousness.

Letter from the HFTP Global President: HFTP Builds on Past Initiatives to Forge Ahead to the Future

11 May 2018
The HFTP Global board, advisory councils, research centers, and its Austin, Texas-based staff work hard year-round to create and implement wholly new ventures. This is evident with the introduction of brand-new global conferences, digital resources, industry research and more.

HITEC Amsterdam 2018: Why I Will Definitely Be Back

19 April 2018
This has been my first HITEC conference, and it has been one of the most informative three days I have had since I entered the world of hospitality a couple of years ago. While I prepared for the conference, I read up on the latest technological innovations, and on startups trying to overthrow OTAs. I read about revenue management and machine learning. Stepping off the plane in Amsterdam, I was confident I had done my homework and was ready to keep up with all the technical conversations I was going to have.

AI and Voice Recognition Explored at HITEC Amsterdam

12 April 2018
I have had the pleasure of a front row seat at a very special panel discussion. The hospitality industry’s top tech executives got together at HITEC Amsterdam today to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and voice recognition. The challenge: to make sense of all of the changes happening in information technology and articulate value-adding solutions for the hospitality industry. How do we turn a land of confusion into a land of opportunity? The panelists had a few secrets to share.

Translation Services: Lost (and Found) in Translation

11 April 2018
Here are some dots that you can easily connect: globalization, emerging markets and international travel. You may think “Oh, what a cliché!” Well then, you must have noticed the need skyrocketing for reliable translation, especially if you are in the travel or hospitality industries.

The Art of Pitching: Is it Overrated - or Essential?

10 April 2018
Pitching… that thing we force notoriously introverted geeks to do for funding. The main idea is that an entrepreneur — unless his name is Elon Musk or Tony Stark — has limited resources and needs the financial support of pockets that are substantially deeper than his own. If you, as an aspiring business leader, want potential partners and investors to buy into your idea, you need to sell it in a concise, explicit and exciting way to a floor of overconfident, seen-it-all financiers who might not know much about the technical complexities of that next big idea you’re certain to have found. Letter From the HFTP Global President: HFTP's Latest Initiatives Fit Nicely into the Overall Picture

13 March 2018
When I first assumed my role as president of the HFTP Global board four months ago, my promise was to continue to deliver on those initiatives that have been put forth in the past several years. In addition, I stated that I would work together with the board, councils and HFTP team to address any relevant issue as the year moved forward. I knew that progress would be necessary — no, critical — for success. Written By: Timothy G. Nauss, CHAE
