The hospitality sector optimistically, albeit cautiously, welcomed the third quarter. Expo Real ended October 9, 2019. Although there are still some smaller conferences scheduled later this year, it was an excellent ‘wrap-up’ session for many of the investors, developers, and operators present and active in the European hospitality space.

According to last year's IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking - which assesses a country's adoption rate of digital technologies by looking at (a) the available talent pool to develop and implement new technologies, (b) the regulatory environment, governance practices and frameworks within which organisations have to operate in, as well as (c) the agility of countries to integrate new technologies - Asia-Pacific has had the highest scores, closely followed by Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA); the Americas lagged behind. However, when looking at a country-specific level, the United States of America secured the top spot.

Later this month the 25th Annual Lodging Conference will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, an event that historically caps off the "conference year" for many in the hotel business. It is a time to reconnect with industry friends and colleagues, but it also gives us a few days to pause and reflect on the past year and speculate on the year to come. Heading into the event there are a number of agenda items that pique our interest, so let's dive in.

Over the first half of this year, I have been able to network and brainstorm with senior executives in the hotel, travel, and technology spaces. Although the conversations all came from slightly different angles, there were many similarities that all drove toward one core topic — the experience. Interestingly, "the experience," as we have deemed it, didn't just relate to the forward-facing guest or customer, but also to the employees and their needs and wants. The other common denominator, and this is not surprising, was the need for all-things-tech-related to be mobile-friendly. As we move into the year 2020 and beyond, 5G networks will be the new normal; speed, responsiveness, and immediate feedback will be at the forefront of every experience for the guest and employee.

Common sense dictates that the more information people have the more informed decisions they will make. This reasoning works flawlessly with problems or issues that are composed of well-defined "cause-and-effect" relationships. Of course, business in the real-world does not get done in sterile environments but instead takes place in dirty test tubes. Here, critical information in an equation is neither always known nor can be properly measured.

Whenever a company is merging with or being taken over by one of its competitors — something increasingly commonplace in 2017 and 2018 (thanks largely to Accor's busy buying spree) — AETHOS is keen to point the sector's attention to the importance of senior leadership "stepping up its game" to proactively manage transition periods. The same, of course, is true for times of major industry shifts which alter the conditions and the environment businesses operate in. Sadly, it seems, ignorance is wide-spread when it comes to all that is happening in the tech space with few leaders taking decisive steps forward to acknowledge and address the need to rectify the situation.
