Imagine being able to ride a bike down the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard without fear of oncoming traffic. That was the scene mid June … before visitors from nearby states began driving to the entertainment capital of the world in search of a respite from COVID-19. Las Vegas is open, but it is far from business as usual, and it will take some time for large convention business to return. While flights are limited, visitors are coming nonetheless, and we are welcoming them with open arms . . . albeit from a socially acceptable distance.

The reality is that for far too long, the safety of hotel employees has been placed on the back burner. A passing consideration to follow the foremost priority: the guest experience. Yet, over time, the outcry of hospitality staff who have suffered injuries, abuse, emergencies, or harassment while performing their duties has been steadily on the rise. It has become obvious that these reported incidents are only the tip of the iceberg, and that hotels have a much larger problem on their hands, one which can only be mitigated with industry-wide action.

There is perhaps no greater fear than to find yourself in desperate need of help — but with no way to call for help. It is a concern that plagues countless individuals and industries, depending on the risks associated with any given job or position, but one which is felt notably by hospitality workers. A hotel room is not merely a place for guests to relax and unwind; it's also an incredibly vulnerable environment for hospitality staff who often perform the duties of their job alone. Hotel workers are an especially vulnerable group.

Certain things in life can be a gamble, but what about personal safety? Or, in the case of casinos, what about the safety of staff? Of course, the answer seems obvious. Admittedly, the well-being of staff should never be left to chance or treated with the same whimsical probability so often applied to a friendly game of blackjack, right? And yet, for years, the safety of staff on casino grounds was anything but assured. Just as hotels have struggled with the prevalence of staff-related incidents including, but not limited to, injury, harassment, and assault, bustling casinos have endured the development of similar, concerning trends. Casinos, after all, invite an influx of guests from around the world, with studies showing that 26% of the population gambles (1.6 billion people worldwide, to be precise), along with a 4.1% increase in Indian gaming revenues. As patrons are caught up in games of chance and, subsequently, feel their inhibitions lower with the consumption of alcohol, incidents seem to happen at a higher frequency. However, the priority was always centered on the guest and player experience, the lights, the games, the action, the service, and, likely as an unintentional byproduct, the staff experience took a backseat, even in times of crisis.

Sometimes when things seem the darkest, moments of beauty emerge in the most unexpected places. During this time of quarantine, rivers are cleaning up, vegetation is growing, the air is becoming cleaner, there are fewer reports of crime, families are bonding, workers are resting, and nations are banding together for the good of mankind. While hospitality is possibly one of the hardest hit industries, it too is finding a silver lining amidst the darkness.
